Understanding our heritage: Surveys and recording of heritage features in the landscape and undertaking a number of Local Landscape Character Assessments in rural Penwith parishes
Description
The aim of Yth yw agan Pluw or That’s Our Parish was to encourage local residents to become more aware of their heritage and what should be protected and recorded in the future, by supporting a number of rural parishes within Penwith to carry out Local Landscape Character Assessment (LLCA) surveys of their local cultural and historical heritage, and biodiversity. The compiled assessments can help parishes to safeguard, plan and manage heritage, landscape and historic character and local distinctiveness for the future.
To support this, volunteers from a number of parishes have received free training in specialist skills required to undertake the LLCAs, and in surveying historic and natural features and recording plants and wildlife. All those who take part have increased their knowledge of the heritage within their Parish.
As a result local communities have gained a deeper understanding of their local landscape, by bringing them together and encouraging them to work across parish boundaries to survey and record what is important to them and what special features may be at risk if not captured through this work.
This project was led by our Community Coordinator, working closely with CEC landscape architects, and the Cornwall AONB as lead partner.
Each of the Parishes of Ludgvan, Madron, Sennen, St Just, Towednack and Zennor who took part in the PLP That’s Our Parish Project hold copies of the completed Local Landscape Character Assessment reports.
